An understanding of the film Out of Africa
Abstract:
After becoming a film, Out of Africa, an autobiography by Isak Dinesen, had a great success. The reasons of its success certainly cannot leave the efforts of the director Sydney Pollack and screenwriter. This paper analyses the factors of its achievement and presumes director’s thought on the movie. Meanwhile, the paper will give modern film more enlightenment.

The film is based loosely on the autobiographical book Out of Africa written by Isak Dinesen (the pseudonym of Danish author Karen Bli*en), which was published in 1937, with additional material from Dinesens book Shadows on the Grass and other sources. This film received 28 film awards, including seven Academy Awards.”(Pollack, Sydney. & Isak Dinesen, 1985)
The story is about Karen Dinesen, who is a affluent women and wants to go to Africa to run her own farm. In order to come true this dream, Karen asks her friend Baron Bror Bli*en to marry her and make a life in the British colony known today as Kenya at a cost of giving him a sum of money to run a dairy farm. Then Karen goes to Africa as baroness ,but things seem not to be the way she thought. Bror has used her money to buy a coffee plantation rather than a dairy farm. Moreover, Karen is broken heart by Bror’s e*tramarital affairs. Although they have a marriage of convenience, there are still se* and love between them. Karen meets Denys Finch Hatton, a local big-game hunter, whom she develops a close friendship with. After separating from Bror, she falls in love with Denys and this time is the greatest love they have ever had. However, as a man who desires freedom, Denys refuses to commit to marriage in spit of his true love to Karen. His confession infuriates Karen very much. At the same time, the plantation suffers a devastating fire. Therefore,the crop and all of the factory equipment are ruined. Being a bankrupt, losing the relationship with Denys, Karen has no situation to stay at Africa any longer and decides to return home to Denmark. In the end, after hearing the news of Denys’s death in a plane crash, Karen feels that everything she owned has lost. She then backs to home and never returns.
Chapter 2 The factors of success of the movie Out of Africa
The film Out of Africa received 28 film awards, including seven Academy Awards. Although the book had been published in 1937 before it was adapted into a screenplay, people know the film well prior to the book. Why does the film have such a great success? In this chapter, I will analyze the reasons of its success.
