tics. So some colors even become adorable to people, but some become taboos. In today’s multi-cultural society, translation, as an important device in the cross-cultural communication, is a mode of cultural transfer. It is significant to understand and grasp color words and their functions in the cultural transfer. This paper tries to make a contrastive study of color words from some major differences by comparison and analysis of them .

摘 要
英漢語言中表示各種不同顏色或色彩的詞極為豐富。顏色與人類生活息息相關(guān)。毫無疑問,顏色詞被廣泛應(yīng)用于人類語言中,并且賦予了豐富的感情和文化內(nèi)涵。我們不僅要注意它最基本的含義,還得注意它更為廣泛和深層的象征義,由于受各自語言文化習慣,歷史文化背景和傳統(tǒng)習俗等因素的影響,在不同文化中象征義也不盡相同,與之相反的是有它們自己的特點。因此,有些顏色甚至構(gòu)成了人們對他它的崇尚和禁忌.在多元文化的今天,翻譯作為跨文化交流的一種重要手段,是文化轉(zhuǎn)換的一種模式,了解和掌握顏色詞極其在文化轉(zhuǎn)換中的作用具有極為重要的意義。本文通過對中英文文化以上方面進行對比分析,試圖從一些主要不同方面進行對顏色詞的分析研究。

Introduction
Vocabulary plays an important role in human language, while color words belong to it. It can directly reflect the social changes and cultural development, so can color words. Color is a part of our life. It is closely related to people’s life and e*ists everywhere. Both Chinese and English are rich in words which are used to e*press different kinds of colors. So we should pay much attention to these words not only their own original and basic meanings but also their deeper and wide-ranging symbolic meanings. Without understanding of them, we will probably run into obstacles or make fun of ourselves in communication. In today’s multi-cultural society, the symbolic meanings of color words embody lots of cultural values and connotations in cross-cultural communication. And color words are endowed with various emotions and connotations in different nations, namely, people in different cultures between China and English countries hold different attitudes toward the same color for different language habits, historical backgrounds and traditional customs and so on. Therefore we must learn well about the cultural connotations and the symbolic meanings of color words before learning the nations language.
Chapter 1
Introduction of Color Words and Their Historical Backgrounds
1.1 Definition of Color words
Scientifically, color is a visual phenomenon launched, reflected or caused through certain light wave by the object. Meanwhile, there is another sayings that "color words" indicate the word which is used to stand for a kind of color. As we all know, in whatever languages, color words are used for describing different things. However, the color words reflect the different cultural connotations in different languages, but the similarity is that as a part of words, color words are used in writing to transmit information. Actually, color words are words which simply show different colors. Like the onomatopoeic word, a color word has little merit in itself. Only when it suggests the image of the original, or fortifies the sense in the version, it has value in translation”(*iao Junshi, P173, 1982).We should know that the symbolic meaning are wholly different in different cultures, history, background, aesthetic and psychology because of the countrys geography.
1.2 Historical Backgrounds of Color words Both in English and Chinese Cultures
In Western cultures, people regard and deal with things rationally at the very beginning and can easily accepted the color for its fast development of education and science. And the symbolic meanings of the color words are very direct in Western culture for they often display the basic meaning of color words to the objective world. We can know it from the western literature that the oldest theory in color words history is Aristotles Black and White Theory, in which color is made up of hue, luminosity and saturation.
